This is Mary J. Blige's year, and there's no avoiding it. For the first time, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul has been presented with the keys to Atlantic City, following her most recent recognition as a Time 100 Most Influential Person.
During the "Together We Rise" Inaugural Gala afterparty, which Mary J. Blige hosted on Saturday (June 4), Mayor Marty Small Sr. presented the singer with the keys. A key to Atlantic City was presented to Mayor Small by the city's mayor: "As Mayor of the magnificent city of Atlanta, I saw that Atlanta offered you a day,"
Mayor Small said.
The city of Atlanta celebrated Strength of a Woman Day on May 5 in honor of Mary J. Blige in advance of her first annual Strength of a Woman Festival and Summit, which took place last month.
The "Real Love" singer reflected on her three-decade career influence as she accepted the BBMAs Icon Award.
Icons are born because of the current status of the globe, she said. "They're a household name in an instant. This, however, is not the case at all. Being great requires a lot of patience, dedication, and the ability to persevere through a lot of setbacks. Achieving the inconceivable and being hailed as an icon by a large number of people is what being an icon means to me. This is what I've always stood for."
The 30th anniversary of her debut album, What's the 411?, coincides with this newest distinction.
