The Hot 97 Summer Jam 2022 line-up appears to be a who's who of artists.
New York's Hip-Hop/R&B FM radio station Hot 97's annual Summer Jam concert is one of the greatest live music events of the year and has been a lengthy mainstay in the culture.
Performing on their stage has become a rite of passage for musicians hoping to advance in their careers or solidify their place in music history because of their long history of producing future icons.
Hot 97 will continue the Summer Jam tradition on Sunday, June 12 at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, nearly 30 years after the original concert took place at Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey. Tri-State region heavyweights are paired with rising stars from all over the country, including Atlanta, Chicago, and Miami.
Fivio Foreign from Brooklyn will headline the main stage, which will also feature a variety of surprise guests, as well as DreamDoll, Shenseea, Benny The Butcher, Burna Boy, Roddy Rich and Pusha T. Other performers on the Main stage include City Girls, Lil Baby and Lil Durk. Girll Codee, Nardo Wick, BabyFace Ray, Drewski & Friends starring B-Lovee, JNR Choi, Dougie B., 22GZ, Lady London, Saucy Santana, NLE Choppa, Yung Bleu, and Cordae are all on the Festival Stage, which promotes rising musicians with the potential to ultimately perform on the main stage. To commemorate the memories of DJ Kay Slay, Hot 97 will be hosting an event in his honor called Summer Jam, which will feature appearances from a wide range of hip-hop luminaries.
On-air personalities Ebro Darden and Laura Stylez and Peter Rosenberg of Hot 97 unveiled this year's Summer Jam roster on their 'Ebro in the Morning' radio show back in April, and VIBE was there to see it all come together.
In celebration of this year's most significant anniversary, there was a joyful atmosphere inside Hot 97, with staff members rushing around and champagne flutes being handed out to commemorate the event.
Summer Jam would not be the same without Ebro, Stylez, and Rosenberg weighing in on the relevance of each act and why you shouldn't miss them at Summer Jam.
Among the topics discussed by Ebro, Stylez, and Rosenberg include Summer Jam 2022, the effort it takes to put on a Hip-Hop event, and the fact that it has been the scene of many memorable moments in the history of the genre.
Is there anything in particular you'd like to see?
Ebro Darden (Ebro): Burna [Boy], Fivio [Foreign] are two characters I'm eager to see. Lil Baby and Lil Durk come to mind. The two of them have had some success together, so I'm curious to see whether they'd like to collaborate on a song like "Every Chance I Get" by Khaled. Then it will be great. Yes, it will be enjoyable.
In other words, Laura Stylez: For me, it's a homecoming to see what Fivio has in store. After all, it's a show for New York and New Jersey, right? Since he has a lot of notable people lined up, I can't wait to see them all. Saucy Santana and Girl Code will definitely excite me on the festival stage.
Definitely. Rosenberg, what are your thoughts?
Peter Rosenberg: I'm looking forward to seeing Shenseea in action. She's a terrific artist for Summer Jam, and I think this is a great setting for her. For Fivio, it's a significant moment, so I'm eager to watch how it goes. This could be one of the greatest moments of Pusha T's career, if not the greatest moment of his whole career. So, I enjoy watching what individuals do when they're in the mood.
Ebro Darden (Ebro): In other words, it's talking to musicians' representatives and record labels far in advance to learn about their long-term music plans and the new songs they'll be putting out. That's the first step; the next is to find the artists who will record and release music. We're going to have a long-term success at the radio station if we keep listening to and watching the music. Conversations about that song begin in mid-June of the same year, and we're simply exposing it to the audience. As a result, on June 13th, 2022, we'll begin [planning for] 2023.
At the MetLife Stadium, I'm trying to secure the stage, because we have to accomplish that too. All summer long, those stages you see at festivals and huge concerts are on the move. For this reason, it is imperative that you make sure that you book your date and get a stage that is big enough for the venue. To ensure that the carousel in the middle is on one of those stages, we need to reserve one of those few. Basically, that's it. Everything, including the artists, the sponsors, and everything else, is included here. So, yeah, there is a lot of work involved.
Describe Summer Jam's influence and role in Hip-Hop culture in your own words.
Rosenberg: Surely you've seen the Jay-Z video that recently surfaced? I mean, 21 years later, people are still talking about it. There's always going to be a moment at Summer Jam that everyone is going to speak about, no matter what. There are several stories of Nas wishing to crucify Jay-Z, whether it was his "Hov moment" in 2001 or some other incident. Beatz vs. West battle, T-death Pain's of autotune moment, 1997's Wu-Tang battle. Summer Jam's history is made up of a wide range of events, from the first Summer Jam to the most recent.
A couple of years ago, Remy Ma, brought out all these female MCS—Cardi B, Young MCA, Queen Latifah, and Yo-Yo. The presence of so much female vigor on one stage was quite inspiring. While some of them may be polarizing, many of them are uplifting.
As a result, the city has received criticism over the years for Summer Jam's support of performers from other regions. Describe Summer Jam's ability to bring together people from all walks of life and from all corners of the cultural spectrum?
Ebro Darden (Ebro): We've got a responsibility to represent New York and the Tri-State area. That's our first impression, but the musicians and other creators of the music have a responsibility to produce work that will be commercially successful. Summer Jam won't do business with you if you can't sell out SOBs. One of these theaters, Gramercy or Irving Plaza, if you're not selling out. In order to believe that you deserve to be in a stadium with a capacity of 60,000 people, you must be under the influence of narcotics. If you don't comprehend the game, you need to see a doctor. Because of this, we look for musicians who are making an impression on the music-buying public. Look around and ask yourself, 'Are these streets too hot for you?' It doesn't matter if you're only popping in your own Instagram comments. Period.
Over the years, the Hot 97 Summer Jam Festival stage has served as a cradle for a number of rising musical artists. Artists that began their careers on a festival stage before moving onto the main stage include these names.
Stylez said, "Travis Scott!?" Chance and Kendrick This person is known as the Rapper.
[Actions] A$AP Rocky, Bronson Joey Bada$$ and Rocky are two of the most well-known rappers in the world. There have been a lot of folks because we're forgetting.
How do you think Hot 97 will change in the future?
For us, over the years, I think it's been about consistency. Get their favorite musicians out on stage and having a good time for the public. There's always something new in the world of technology. We can now listen to HOT 97 online or via the HOT 97 app. We have a plethora of options for enticing folks to attend the concert. People buy tickets, and our first concern is to ensure that everyone who has purchased a ticket and is present at the event is satisfied. Doing more than just the event would be my recommendation. As far as our work goes, I believe we've already exceeded the facility's capability.
