Rapsody Talks Working With Sanaa Lathan In Upcoming Feature Film Debut, ‘On The Come Up’
Rapsody is eager to develop her brand while exhibiting her abilities outside of music, having established herself as one of the top lyricists in Hip-Hop today.
The Grammy-nominated rapper recently announced that she has landed a part in an upcoming film opposite actress and director Sanaa Lathan. "I've been coaching the lead actress in a film with Sanaa called 'On The Come Up,'" Rapsody told VIBE exclusively. "I also recorded music for the film with 1500 or Nothing, which was an incredible experience." I believe we'll begin pushing it sooner rather than later."
Rapsody's engagement in the musical side of things may come naturally to her, but she says that performing in front of the camera in an actual acting capacity was an adjustment for her. She thanks Lathan with bringing her on board and teaching her the ropes and various tools of the trade.
"It was an incredible experience," she added. "It's something I'd like to do a lot more of." "I enjoy tying cinema and music together when the chance arises. When they brought me on board, I was ecstatic, but it was fantastic. Sanaa welcomed me in and let me learn a lot about filming and the process because she trusted my opinion. We collaborated nicely with Larrance Dopson in order to create something musically awesome."
While completing touches on her upcoming album, which is set to debut later this year, is her top priority, she admits that her work on On The Come Up isn't far behind, as those two projects are now "the largest things" on her plate.
When asked about a probable release date for On The Come Up, she chuckles and says, "I have no clue." "I'm not sure how film schedules operate, but I'm eager." I've seen the film four or five times and I just adore it. I believe it will be amazing and significant for the culture."
