Our Dubai trip to meet with agencies interested in investing in education coincided with Aisha Buhari’s birthday— Governors’ wives

Stories and images circulating on social media and in some sectors of the media stating that some governors' wives departed Nigeria for Dubai to attend a birthday party for Nigeria's First Lady, Aisha Buhari, have been dismissed by the Nigeria Governors' Wives Forum (NGWF).

The Governors' Wives Forum expressed surprise at the footage being circulated on social media, claiming that selected governors' wives were part of the First Lady's entourage to woo individuals interested in investing in Africa's education and technology, with "priority given to young people and women."

Some sectors of the media, but not Vanguard, stated that some spouses of Nigerian governors had left the country for Dubai, where they were spotted with cakes and flowers at an event thought to be Aisha Buhari's birthday party.

The Governors Wives Forum, in a statement provided to Vanguard, denied that they went on a birthday trip, claiming that they were on a trip to woo investors in education and health care, which coincided with the First Lady's birthday, and the delegation decided to pay a private visit to the president's wife with flowers.

"Our attention has been attracted to a social media post uploaded on March 1, 2022, claiming that various Nigerian governors' wives were in Dubai to surprise The First Lady of Nigeria, Dr. Aisha Buhari, on the occasion of her birthday on February 17, 2022."

"The Nigerian Governors Wives were in the entourage of the First Lady of Nigeria, who was on an official trip to the UAE, for the avoidance of doubt and in the interest of the public."

"Visits to Dubai Expo 2020, tours of the Dubai e-learning center, Dubai YouthHub, and talks with UAE foundations and agencies interested in investing in education, health, and technology in Africa, with a focus on women and young people, were among the highlights of the trip."

"The journey took place on HE Aisha Buhari's birthday. The delegation of Governors' Wives paid her a special visit on her birthday, February 17th, to gift her with a cake and flowers.

"Following the brief talk, we went to our scheduled meetings for the day."

"As a result, we were shocked to see footage of the tour interpreted as Governors' Wives leaving Nigeria solely to celebrate his birthday."

"This is not the case, and we consider this notion to be outrageous.

"We are all committed to supporting our spouses and our First Lady, and we would never be a part of something that would put them or ourselves in jeopardy."

"Our key takeaways from our visits to various agencies in Dubai, as well as the briefings we received, point to the need for Nigeria to increase its investments in education, science, and technology, as well as provide more opportunities for young people, who are the future's most important resource."

"We will continue to address these concerns in our own work and lobby for greater commitments from our leaders in these areas." The statement was as follows:
