When you are recognized as the greatest or most accomplished figure in a field, those who follow in your footsteps desire to attain the same heights and adopt the same characteristics as you. In Hip-Hop, this is far from a new phenomenon for Jay-Z, as other musicians, including megastars Lil Wayne and Drake, have been driven to compare themselves to the rap superstar over the years.
The most recent musician to be cited in the same breath as Hov is Chicago rapper Lil Durk, who was recently compared to Hov by rapper and podcaster Gillie Da King. Gillie was asked who he thinks is the "next Jay-Z" during a recent conversation, to which the Philly native reacted by repeating a Durk verse.
"You know who the new Hov is — 'I'm Durkio, but I'm Chicago JAY-Z,'" Gillie remarked, referring to a bar where the burgeoning superstar spit back in 2020 on "The Voice." "Yes, to the young street n***as. Because Hov was all about making money and being a hustler."
In fact, Durk looks to be vying for the honor of being likened to probably the greatest rapper of all time, especially in terms of his status in Chicago. Durk has doubled down on his claim to be "the Chicago Jay-Z" on social media after declaring himself "the Chicago Jay-Z" on Instagram in 2021. In a separate Instagram post, he stated, "I did some in Chicago nobody ever done for the artist and the city we were a family in there the opp word ain't matter last night? – Chicago JAY-Z."
