From their most recent album, 'Most Normal,' the Irish post-punk and noise rock band Gilla Band has released a new song named 'Capgras.'
Gilla Band, formerly known as Girl Band, signed to Rough Trade Records in December 2014 after releasing a string of limited 7' singles on Any Other City records throughout 2014. The first album of the band was positively welcomed by critics. 'This Irish four-piece yells at you from the very start, a continuous succession of pounding, smashing songs peppered with shattered, imagistic lyrics,' said The Guardian, calling the band 'full of sound and fury.' The vocal delivery by Kiely 'certainly sounds believable,' according to Rolling Stone. But he doesn't appear to be too self-conscious about it, either; rather than hiding away in shame, it's as if he's proud of his fish-belly skin and concave abs. They were compared by Rolling Stone to Liars and Nick Cave's Birthday Party. According to drummer Adam Faulkner, the band doesn't listen to 'most of the bands we are compared to.' The band cites Bad Brains, James Chance and the Contortions, Neu!, and The Chemical Brothers as primary musical inspirations.
Geoff Travis, the label's founder, watched the band play many times and decided to sign them because he wanted to 'enable what [the band] was doing [at the time] on a greater scale.' The members of Gilla Band were given the freedom to express their individuality and to make their own albums. In September 2015, they released Holding Hands With Jamie, their self-produced first album, through Rough Trade.
Gilla Band's new song, 'Shoulderblades,' was released in June 2019 after a four-year hiatus. By August 2019, a second single, 'Going Norway,' has also been released. These tracks were issued as singles in advance of the band's second studio album, The Talkies, released through Rough Trade on September 27. The album has a repetitious and experimental sound that is marked by its unconventional use of effects-laden guitars, abstract stream-of-consciousness lyrics, and stylistic borrowings from techno and industrial music. Many reviewers have praised the album's gloomy, disturbing atmosphere, labeling it as noise rock and post-punk.
Gilla Band was Formed in 2011, the group features Dara Kiely on vocals, Alan Duggan on guitar, Daniel Fox on bass, and Adam Faulkner on drums. Their first release, 2012's 'In My Head,' was followed by 2013's 'You're a Dog,' both of which helped them gain a devoted fan base during their live shows in Ireland and the United Kingdom. After the success of the track, the band released the live EP France 98 through Any Other City, which they had produced themselves. To strengthen their profile and gain new fans, Gilla Band recorded a rendition of 'Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage?' by techno musician Blawan. This led to a short tour of the United Kingdom in April 2013. The group revealed its new name, Gilla Band, in November of 2021. The group claimed that their old name 'may have been fostering a culture of non-inclusivity' and that they changed it because it was 'misgendered. Gilla Band has thus far produced a number of singles and EPs in addition to two full-length albums: 2015's Holding Hands with Jamie (which received widespread praise) and 2017's The Talkies (which followed a hiatus in 2016–2017 owing to band members' health problems) (2019).
