The city of the gods — Fivio flaunts his influence and taunts his detractors while Keys interpolates the chorus of The Chainsmokers' "New York City," declaring, "If I want 'em to not allow you come into the city, it's my decision."

Despite the fact that the track is billed to Fivio Foreign, West's verse is a highlight — a lengthy confessional rich with cultural references and clever wordplay in which the Donda rapper addresses his public feuds and social media meltdowns once more.

"A hundred goons pulling up to SNL this afternoon/When I pull up, it's dead on arrival," he continues, possibly referring to Saturday Night Live actor Pete Davidson for the second time. "They behave as if they love you, but they don't/They host a party but don't invite you/ I've seen it happen to Michael/They say you're insane because you're black and affluent, it's like a cycle/If you text me anything hype, you better reply back and pretend it's a typo."

Keys released the track "Lala (Unlocked)" with US rapper and vocalist Swae Lee of the hip hop band Rae Sremmurd on September 9, 2021. At the MTV Video Music Awards in 2021, the song was performed. On September 23, 2021, the song video was released.

The track comes ahead of the release of Keys, his eighth studio album and the follow-up to 2020's Alicia. The album was published on December 10, 2021, as a double album that included both fully produced and broken down versions of new content. It was first previewed via Alicia's 2021 Noted YouTube docu-series.
