Concerned about rising drug misuse among Nigerian youngsters, an expert has urged for the rapid establishment and support of more drug rehabilitation centres across the country, while also urging relevant stakeholders to combat drug and substance addiction vigorously.

Dr Taiwo Afolabi, Group Executive Vice Chairman, SIFAX Group, spoke at the Set 50 graduation of the 31 rehabilitated drug addicts at the Christ Against Drug Abuse Ministry, CADAM, in Araga, Epe, Lagos state, and said that more centres will provide victims with the opportunity to be treated, supported, and trained before their reintegration into society.

"Drug misuse among our youths is already a ticking time bomb poised to explode with disastrous effects if more coordinated efforts to combat this societal sin are not taken."

"All relevant stakeholders, including parents, governments, educational institutions, religious bodies, traditional rulers, community leaders, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), media, and corporate organizations, must collaborate and come up with a fool-proof strategy that addresses the problem holistically," he said.

"These three females and 28 males were admitted into the one-year rehabilitation program of CADAM last year, and today, in the presence of you all and their proud family members, we are ushering them back into society with hope and determination to live independent and productive drug-free lives," said the Matron, CADAM, who is also the wife of the General Overseer, Redeem Christian Church of God, Pastor Folu Adeboye.

"With the fresh foundation created here, the support of the family, and the grace of God, we are convinced that these lovely people will achieve their goals."

"We must be encouraged to collaborate in order to limit the prevalence of this disease, especially among our teenagers and young adults." "We cannot continue to treat this teeming person with such casualness or benign disregard," she added.

"The group of 50 graduating beneficiaries consists of 28 men and 3 women who received free one-year treatment and rehabilitation services at the Enoch and Folu Adeboye Rehabilitation Centre in the previous 12 months, where they received intense therapy for their drug addiction."

"Their stay also provided them with opportunities to learn new skills such as ICT, tailoring, leatherwork, shoemaking, boarding, hairdressing, cooking, and home economics." Such abilities will go a long way toward ensuring that they return to society as productive citizens after their rehabilitation."

One of the beneficiaries, Taire Clarke, who had been a drug addict for over three decades, reflected on his 12-month stay at CADAM and how it changed his life, saying,

"This is not the first treatment program I've been to, I've been to numerous rehab programs within and outside the country."

I was in Kaduna rehab a couple of times, Abuja rehab three times, and Jos rehab three times, but it was in CADAM that I found serenity, strength, direction, and God. It's not going to work without Jesus. That is my opinion, and my own experience has convinced me that a drug addict requires the intervention of Jesus.

"My metamorphosis began gradually, and it progressed at a glacial pace. The first thing that occurred to me was the realization that I needed to make a choice. The journey from the metropolis to this Epe rehabilitation centre is long. It isn't the most convenient location in the world. So when we did the initial screening and I was one of the shortlisted, I had withdrawal symptoms because I had used up until I was coming to the rehab, and my addict mind was like store up as much of the drug inside you as possible so that the effect can last much longer. By the time we got on the road, we had spent two days in camp, and I had started having withdrawal symptoms.

"And they don't do what a lot of other rehabs do, which is to offer you different substitute substances like diazepam and pharmaceuticals to help you get through the withdrawal." When you arrive, you crash to ground zero, and all they can do is give you a bed, apologize, and pray. It took a long time for it to recuperate. I had two options: stay and improve or quit and flee. Many people did give up. We were about 50 when we started.

During my stay at the rehab, I learned ICT, catering, and bathing skills.

I'm at Bible college, and I'm at the Redeem Christian Bible, college camp, where I'm studying theology while maintaining my talent as the official barber at the Bible School, so it's a win-win situation."
