Dr. Dre Gives $10 Million To Compton High School, Performing Arts Center Named In His Honor

On at about 00:04:10 AM, Dr. Dre Gives $10 Million To Compton High School, Performing Arts Center Named In His Honor was updated.

Dr. Dre contributed financially to the establishment of a Compton high school. According to the Los Angeles Times, the hip-hop mogul contributed $10 million for a new $200 million facility for Compton High School.

In his honor, the new performing arts center at the school will be called the "Andre Dr. Dre Young Performing Arts Center." The entire renovation is funded through a bond measure passed by the school district in 2015.

According to the publication, Dre said at Saturdays groundbreaking event, "I was an artsy child in school with no outlet for it." "I knew I had something exceptional to offer the world, but schools left me feeling invisible because I had nothing to back up my gift."

"This city is extraordinary, and [the] young people who live here are special," he concluded.
According to a news release, the performing arts facility was unanimously named after the Grammy Award-winning performer in November of 2017.

In a statement at the time, Compton Unified Board President Satra Zurita said, "I am looking forward to seeing this wonderful concept break ground and am very thankful to Mr. Young, who has done Compton proud." "He is firmly establishing an opportunity legacy for our youngsters!"

"I am appreciative to Mr. Young, not just for making such [a] donation to our District and its children, but also for viewing our students as worthy... as having potential and deserving of opportunity," said Superintendent Darin Brawley.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the facility seats over 900 people, and the 126-year-old schools new campus will accommodate up to 1800 students. A new gym, an aquatics center, a football stadium, and a track are among the improvements. Early in 2025, the new campus will open.
