Anitta began production on her fifth studio album, initially titled Girl from Rio, after releasing her trilingual visual album Kisses (2019).
Maria Elegante song by singer Anitta — She said in a 2020 interview with the Brazilian magazine Veja that she had 30 tracks ready for the album and was working on the tracklist with her manager Brandon Silverstein.
Anitta released the song "Girl from Rio" in April 2021, which was billed as the album's title track at the time, but she and her team opted not to release the album that year.
On April 1, 2022, Anitta revealed the album's new title, release date, and cover art, as well as the fact that she would explain her reasoning for the cover and that she "liked" that it was "creating debate," which she stated was her intention.
"Even after millions of plastic surgeries, physicians, and interventions... my inner just stays the same," Anitta said on her social media pages afterwards, referring to the "notable plastic surgery discrepancies" between the different faces on the cover. The title was modified to Versions of Me because it "made more sense," she added.
Following the album's launch, Anitta confirmed in an Instagram live that the album would be released in a deluxe version including one major female star duet.
