Keys, a musically trained pianist, began writing songs at the age of 12 and was signed by Columbia Records at the age of 15. She signed with Arista Records after a falling out with her previous company and released her debut album, Songs in A Minor, with J Records in 2001.
The album was a critical and economic triumph, with over 12 million copies sold throughout the world. It generated the number-one hit "Fallin'" on the Billboard Hot 100 and garnered Keys five Grammy Awards in 2002.

In June 2021, InStyle reported that Keys was expanding her skincare line Keys Soulcare to include products for the face, neck, and body.
In an interview with The Guardian, Keys said that her worry over her skin's appearance influenced the development of her skin and body care products. Keys Soulcare was developed after she took a five-year hiatus from wearing make-up. This gave her the time and perspective she needed to develop the products she sells.
Along with the release of new goods, Keys shared a list of "commandments" of activities she does for spiritual and bodily health and well-being with Elle. Keys discussed a self-love routine she practices every morning with Shape magazine, which includes admiring oneself for several minutes.
Keys released the track "Lala (Unlocked)" with US rapper and vocalist Swae Lee of the hip hop band Rae Sremmurd on September 9, 2021. At the MTV Video Music Awards in 2021, the song was performed. On September 23, 2021, the song video was released.
The track comes ahead of the release of Keys, his eighth studio album and the follow-up to 2020's Alicia. The album was published on December 10, 2021, as a double album that included both fully produced and broken down versions of new content. It was first previewed via Alicia's 2021 Noted YouTube docu-series.
