Abuja Residents Protest And Block Kuje-Gwagwalada Route Due To Insecurity
Some residents of Chukuku, an Abuja suburb, barricaded the Kuje-Gwagwalada road as early as 7:00 a.m. yesterday to protest the deterioration of security in the region. According to reports, gunmen raided the location a few weeks ago and abducted five people, including two sons of federal agency employees. After their father was shot dead, two additional ladies were kidnapped in the Yangoji hamlet in Kwali Area Council. A young guy was kidnapped in Petti village a few days later and freed three days later after a N3 million ransom was paid to the gunmen.
To push home their demands, some of the demonstrators lit bonfires on the Kuje-Gwagwalada route and held banners with slogans like "Government should give security for Chukuku community" and "We need security in Chukuku community," among others. "Muna bukatar tsaro," which means "We need security," was also yelled. For the duration of the demonstration, motorists on both sides of the road, those entering Kuje and those leaving the metropolis, were trapped.
