2nd Niger Bridge Hits 91% completion - FG Claims

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT announced yesterday that the Second Niger Bridge is now 91% complete. This is because the Federal Government claims that the sit-in in the southeast has slowed progress on the 2nd Niger Bridge. The bridge was supposed to be finished in February, however it was pushed back due to the COVID-19 lockdown and EndSARS demonstrations.

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, stated at the Special Weekly Briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, that the Second Niger Bridge was one of the cardinal projects of President Muhammadu Buhari's government. The briefing was intended to allow him to deliver more updates on significant cooperation between the federal and state governments in the execution of some of the Ministry's and the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund's major changes (PIDF).

According to the Minister, 1,486 individuals have been directly engaged for the Second Niger Bridge, with an additional 8,110 indirect employment generated. He estimates that three main PIDF projects will cost N1.3 trillion. The projects include the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway (375km), the Second Niger Bridge (11.59km), and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway (127km).

On when the projects would be finished, Fashola stated that the Lagos Ibadan Express Way and Second Niger Bridge will be completed in 2022, while the main carriageway of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano expressway will be completed in Q2 2023, with ancillary works completed later. Meanwhile, the minister has cautioned motorists to resist the urge to exceed 100km/h on finished roads in order to avoid accidents.

He stated that the warning became required when he received letters from several road users commending the quality of work done, who stated that they were going 150 100km/h owing to the smoothness of the roads. He also condemned the selling of Premium Motor Spirit and other petroleum products on public highways, claiming that they damage roads faster.
